Politics as Monkey Business: Citizen Perceptions of Political Lying and Attitudes Toward Democracy

This NWO-funded project (€50,000) examines how citizens perceive political lying and what this means for their attitudes toward democracy. When politicians are accused of lying or are caught in a lie — does it matter to citizens? And if so, under what conditions?
The project investigates:
- How citizens judge the credibility of political lying accusations
- Whether partisan considerations shape perceptions of political honesty
- What the consequences of perceived political dishonesty are for democratic support and political trust
This project forms a direct predecessor to the larger ERC-funded DEMO-LIES project.
